Renee Rose Interview with Cynthia Sax

SAX

This week I was lucky enough to sit down with  USA Today Best Selling Author Cynthia Sax for an interview. She’s a recent discovery of mine, and definitely my new go-to for erotic romance. Her books feature strong, dominant heroes, big-hearted heroines and sex hot enough to steam up your Kindle.

Renee Rose:  Hi Cynthia! I recently had the pleasure of reading the first books in your cyborg romance series Releasing Rage and Breathing Vapor and I was entranced. They were my first cyborg books. Going into the first one, I wasn’t sure what could be hot about a cyborg, but it turns out, you knew exactly what makes them over-the-top delicious. What was your introduction to cyborgs (or inspiration)?

Cynthia Sax:  Awww… thank you, Renee. (big hugs) I’m so glad you enjoyed Releasing Rage and Breathing Vapor.

I’ve loved cyborgs forever but I didn’t know they could be so freakin’ sexy until I read Laurann Dohner’s Cyborg Seduction series (start with Burnin’ Flint, the first book), Eve Langlais’ Cyborgs More Than Machines series (C791 is the first book), and Mina Carter’s Lyon’s Price. These yummy romances changed my view of them forever.

Renee Rose: What makes a cyborg hot?

Cynthia Sax:  They’re manufactured to be the perfect soldiers, hunky and muscular and normally good looking (‘cause why would anyone design an ugly being?).

One of the reasons I love cyborgs so much is because they are naturally conflicted. They’re half man and half machine, torn between emotion and logic, free will and following commands, independence and servitude.  [Renee Rose: To me, the fact that they’re super-human makes them extra-dominant and sexy–kinda like a paranormal hero…yum.]

Renee Rose: How many books do you plan for this series (or do you know?)

Cynthia Sax: I will be releasing at least six cyborg stories but it is a huge universe and I could write many, many more. If readers want more stories, I’ll write more stories. (shrugs) I’m easy going like that.

Renee Rose: What other books have you written?  Are they all sci fi?

Cynthia Sax: (grins) I have 93 stories published. [Renee Rose:  Holy cow!] I have written in SciFi, contemporary and paranormal erotic romance.

Right now, I’m focusing on SciFi and contemporary. It would probably be better for my career if I focused on one but I love switching from out-of-this-world action to grounded-on-Earth sexiness.

My contemporaries all feature billionaires, usually in CEO positions. Why? Because my fantasy isn’t being broke. (laughs) Billionaires are successful. Nothing is sexier than confidence! And they have all the toys. [RR: What’s not to love about a billionaire? I just read your billionaire story The Good Assistant and it rocked!]

As the cyborg series is brand new, my SciFi stories over the next year will be all in this series. I’m super excited to be adding four new stories!

Renee Rose: I would categorize the cyborg series as a D/s (Dominance/submission). Is this a common theme you use? Do you always write about dominant, alpha male-type heroes?

Cynthia Sax:  Releasing Rage definitely has dominance and submission in it. Rage is a warrior, accustomed to giving orders and trained to react to threats. Joan, the human heroine, understands this, allowing him to command her.

While Joan is the ‘perfect’ sub, Mira, the curvaceous human heroine of Breathing Vapor, is a bratty sub. Her cyborg, Vapor, has to discipline her often. And she likes this. Mira has issues letting go and expressing emotion. The sessions over Vapor’s knee help her with this.

The third story, Crash and Burn (releasing in February), will explore bondage. Crash doesn’t like violence so he uses bondage to restrain his very naughty heroine. [RR: mmmmm yeah]

I always write about alpha males. I’m married to a real life alpha male (the real life versions differ from the romance versions). That’s the type of man I’m attracted to and most familiar with. How their relationships are structured depend on the characters. Some of my heroes are Doms. Some are exhibitionists. Some are the mysterious other. Sexual preferences are tied to their personalities.

Renee Rose: How did you go about your world-building with the cyborg series? Did you see and know the world right away or did it develop as you wrote?

Cynthia Sax: One of the reasons I waited to write a cyborg series is because I had to know that some of the elements of the world (specifically, how cyborgs reproduce – yes, cyborg babies) were possible. These major elements were set before I started writing. Some of the little details developed as I told the story. The logic flowed from the big world rules.

Renee Rose: (Spoiler alert!) You may not be willing to answer this, but there were hints at the end of Breathing Vapor that Mira might be pregnant. Will we see her again in future books?

Cynthia Sax: (grins) Only Releasing Rage readers figured out that Mira was pregnant. They saw the signs. That’s how I write most of my series books. Readers don’t have to start with the first book in the series but, if they do, they’ll uncover more of the secrets in the following books.

In Crash and Burn, readers will hear updates about Mira and Vapor and their ever expanding family. They’ll also, of course, hear updates about Joan and Rage. Rage is one of Crash’s closest friends.

Renee Rose: I’m looking forward to Crash and Burn. Any more billionaire romances on the horizon?

Cynthia Sax:  (laughs) I have plenty of billionaire romances releasing in the future also. I love switching back and forth from cyborg to contemporary, alternating the releases. It keeps my muse amused.

Thank you so much, Renee, for interviewing me today. (big hugs) I always enjoy chatting with you.

Releasing Rage
Half Man. Half Machine. All Hers.

Rage, the Humanoid Alliance’s most primitive cyborg, has two goals–kill all of the humans on his battle station and escape to the Homeland. The warrior has seen the darkness in others and in himself. He believes that’s all he’s been programmed to experience.

Until he meets Joan.

Joan, the battle station’s first female engineer, has one goal–survive long enough to help the big sexy cyborg plotting to kill her. Rage might not trust her but he wants her. She sees the passion in his eyes, the caring in his battle-worn hands, the gruff emotion in his voice.

When Joan survives the unthinkable, Rage’s priorities are tested. Is there enough room in this cyborg’s heart for both love and revenge?
