I’m excited to get the full scoop from Renee Rose and Theresa Roemer on their unusual new book, Scoring with Santa. I had the opportunity to beta read this book and it is one delicious holiday sports romance. But what interests me more is the story behind the story of this book.
Theresa Roemer is a celebrity, known both for her charity work, as well as her lines of merchandise including the new fitness clothing line NI30D Athletics. She is also a fitness guru who took the U.S. Open title in bodybuilding at the age of 40, and held the titles of Mrs. Houston U.A., Mrs. Texas U.A., and was the 1st runner up for Mrs. United America concurrently. She wrote the book Naked in 30 Days to empower women to feel as vibrant and healthy at 45 and beyond as they did at 25.
Renee Rose is a USA Today bestselling author of erotic romance, usually quite kinky. So how did these two come together? What was their process like? I interviewed them to find out!
Katherine Deane: I understand that the main character and setting of this book was drawn from Theresa Roemer and her life. How did you gather the information?
Renee Rose: Theresa and I chatted and brainstormed the plot and characters for the book. I also did a little social media and Google stalking of Theresa to get the full flavor.
Katherine Deane: Theresa, how closely does the book represent that time of your life when you owned and managed a chain of fitness clubs? What parts feel “real” to you?
Theresa Roemer: The book is spot on…..It all feels very real, brings back memories of the 16 yrs I was single and having HOT sex….especially in my gyms. Totally all me!!
Katherine Deane: What about the romance aspect– are there any similarities to your life there?
Theresa Roemer: When Renee Rose sat and dug into my head, this story is exactly how I was as that gym owner….like I said, Spot on!!! I love good sex and am very strong about what I want when I want it!!
Katherine Deane: Theresa, the main male character in this story was a yummy football hero, a bit of a player, but also kind and generous. Did you think he made a good book boyfriend? If you weren’t married, would you go for a man like that?
Theresa Roemer: He makes a great book boyfriend. I would definitely be all over this guy if I was still single. He reminds me of a real life jock that I had a relationship with in 1997
Katherine Deane: Renee, you normally write fiction based on characters who come to life in your head. What was it like working on a story based on and with a real live person?
Renee Rose: It was interesting, because I usually play with a power dynamic. I write kinky books, so I often feature heroines who liked to submit. I knew right away that didn’t fit with this character! Theresa and the main character, Brandy are strong, no-nonsense women!
Katherine Deane: Theresa, was it hard to trust someone to write your story? Did you have any apprehensions about it coming out “wrong?”
Theresa Roemer: I felt a connection right away with Renee…..she just seemed to get me and what I was sharing with her. I had no fears.
Katherine Deane: Renee, how was it harder / easier co-writing this story?
Renee Rose: Having someone else brainstorm the plot made it much easier. When I sat down to write, I had the whole map laid out. I’m not a total “pantser” usually, but this was more plot than normal for me.
Katherine Deane: Theresa, were there any hard limits you had about this story– something that would’ve made you say, no way, don’t go there?
Theresa Roemer:No, I am an open book. I am not ashamed of anything I have done.
Katherine Deane: Did you two ever butt heads about the direction of the book?
Renee Rose: No! Honestly, I was a little worried, since I’ve never worked this way before, but it was surprisingly easy!
Katherine Deane: Renee, if someone were to take your life, and fictionalize it, how would you have it done? What events from your life would you keep? What would you steer away from?
Renee Rose: Wow, that’s an interesting question! I suppose I’ve used little pieces here and there in all my books, but no character is really modeled after me.
Katherine Deane: Renee, you have written a lot of kinky books. This story was a wonderful line straddler between erotic romance and mainstream romance. How did it feel? How hard was it to push outside your “normal” comfort zone?
Renee Rose: Again, it just came down to the characters. My usual dominance/submission thing wouldn’t have fit with these characters. They were mature, responsible people. In fact, I had to go back and re-write to add more conflict because I just had them discussing their problems and working them out too easily–lol!
Katherine Deane: What’s next? Is this a series? WIll the two of you be writing more books as a team?
Renee and Theresa: We’ve both agreed to see how this one goes. It’s certainly a possibility!
Definitely entertain the idea again, Renee is fun to work with!!

“Flaming hot sports romance with a dash of Desperate Housewives–Roemer and Rose truly delight!” ~USA Today Bestselling Author Lee Savino
Damn, she bet no woman had ever told him no in his life.
She’d have to be the first. Folding her arms across her chest, partly to keep him from seeing her erect nipples, she held firm. “I’m sorry. I’m happy to have you both here, but not until the proper documentation is in place.”
He smirked, like he thought she was full of shit. Or was it because he knew her nipples were hard?
Damn, was she blushing?
The youth looked at her with an innocent, easygoing appeal.
Was she really capable of throwing them out?
“I’ll bet you’re pretty confident you can sweet talk your way into anything, aren’t you?”
The corners of his mouth twitched. “Is this about money, because I’m happy to pay for both our memberships. It’s just that we only need it for a few weeks and I thought you were interested in supporting the community—”
“I am interested in supporting the community.” Her voice had gone up a notch. How did she end up being the bitch here? “And no, it’s not about the money. It’s just about having the proper liability forms signed by all the parties.”
Rick stepped closer, rather than drawing away. They probably taught him that in Flirting 101. “I’ll tell you what,” he said, flashing that heart-stopping smile at her. His voice was deep and resonant and seemed to go right into her body, activating every cell. “I’ll fill mine out right now, and I’ll have Donnie’s mom sign his tonight so that next time we are set up properly.”
She put her hands on her hips. “Somehow I don’t think you’re taking this—me,” she spluttered. “As seriously as you should.”
Obviously she was right because his smile only increased. He cocked a brow. “How serious do you want to take this?”
Her tummy fluttered at the innuendo. Her brain stomped its foot. “Rick Morehouse, that flirty act might work with Houston Socialites, but it’s not going to work with me.”
His lips twitched. “I wasn’t flirting. I’m just being friendly.”
Half of her wanted to kick him in the shin, the other half considered jumping the sexy man. It was hard enough to run a business as a female entrepreneur in a good ‘ol boys state without having Coach Handsome throwing her off her game.
A fire burned in his green eyes, lighting her from head to toe. As if he had some mesmerizing power, she realized she really didn’t want to tell him no. Her shoulders dropped in defeat. “Fine.” She really hoped nobody got hurt today or it would be her ass on the line.
His smile widened. He had sensual lips, and she imagined he must be the most expert kisser in all of Texas. He’d probably already done toothpaste commercials. She should find time to watch more TV.
“But I will need that liability waiver from his mom here by tomorrow—and yours right now.”
She wanted to wipe that smirk right off his face. Why didn’t he take her seriously?
She whirled around, her ponytail flipping in their direction as she stalked off. And ran right into the leg press machine.
“Ow.” Damn, her shin. That would be a bruise.
Shut up, Coach Perfect.
“Fine.” She rubbed it, hopping on one foot and trying to walk away at the same time. “You just worry about yourself over there.”
She heard the deep rumble of laughter following her out of the room.
