Two beautiful young women got married in Tokyo last week in what could only be described a fairy-tale affair. Koyuki Higashi and Hiroko tied the knot with 30 guests in attendance, including Mickey and Minnie, at Tokyo Disney Resort
Ms. Higashi tweeted about the wedding and her entry was reposted more than 6,000 times — with mostly positive comments.
The Walt Disney Company has long allowed same-sex celebrations on its grounds, but until recent years only in a limited way. In 2007, however, it began allowing same-sex couples to buy high-end wedding packages that include ceremonies with the Disney characters.
According to a story in The New York Times the wedding of Koyuki and Hiroko did leave something to be desired: legal standing. Japan doesn’t recognize same sex marriages.
Let’s hope this wedding, which received widespread publicity, will draw attention to this issue and stir a public debate. In the meantime, we send congratulations from RomanceBeat.
