Ida Pollock, born in Lewisham, South London, wrote under a number of pen names throughout her lifetime. At times she could be Susan Barrie, Pamela Kent, Averil Ives, Rose Burghley, Mary Whistler, and Marguerite Bell. In her 105 years of living, she has managed to write 123 books under 10 pseudonyms. Her books were full of adventure, passion, and heartbreak all while readers were patiently waiting for the heroines to fall in love with not the young heartthrob, but the mature older man. Some of Ida’s work includes White Heat, Mountain of Dreams, Love in the Afternoon and The Man Who Came Back.

Ida didn’t always write romantic novels. In fact, one of her earlier books, written at the age of fourteen, was a thriller. When her mother requested “something pretty,” she turned to romance novels where she produced some of her greatest works.

If her life wasn’t already full of romance with her novels, she drew inspiration from her real life husband, Colonel Hugh Pollock. Colonel Hugh Pollock became her muse for her “swarthy male heroes.” Maybe some of her stories are from firsthand experience with Hugh?

At the age of 105, she still has books coming out with the help of her 69 year old daughter Rosemary. Keep a look out for her 124th book, The Runaway which is coming out soon. Ida, who believes she was born to write, tells us that “I’ve never got bored of it (writing) because it’s something I love. My books are full of hope and romance rather than sex.”
