On April 20, the GLADD Awards took a very gay turn when Darren Criss played the original version of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call me Maybe.” Darren Criss, a member of the cast of the hit show “Glee” appeared on stage acting out through song about the issues surrounding LGBT rights. Darren crooned about these rights and even more so the end to the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8.

Originally Darren planned on playing a “poignant jazz standard,” but through text message Carly Rae Jepsen insisted he sing the original lyrics to the song. Darren thinking the lyrics weren’t appropriate for this event, eventually gave into Carly’s wishes when she promised him these lyrics were much better than what is on the radio. Darren concluded by excusing himself when he said, “So, I’m just following her rules here.”
